The idea of a root canal often sparks anxiety—but much of that fear is based on outdated myths. Thanks to modern restorative therapy techniques and local anesthetics, root canals are now a routine, comfortable, and highly effective procedure for saving natural teeth. At Dr. Bostani’s Advanced Dental, our skilled team offers compassionate care designed to eliminate infection and repair your smile.
Below are frequently asked questions to help you understand what root canal restorative therapy involves:
Root canals are an effective restorative treatment used by dentists when the inner pulp of a tooth is infected or inflamed. When this occurs, treatment is necessary to save the tooth. Rather than removing the entire tooth, a root canal allows us to clean out the infection and preserve your natural tooth structure, avoiding more invasive and costly treatments like extractions and implants.
Not at all! Most patients find the procedure no more uncomfortable than getting a filling. Local anesthesia is used to numb the area completely, ensuring a pain-free experience. Our team focuses on keeping you calm and relaxed throughout the procedure, and any minor discomfort afterward can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain medication.
The process is straightforward and highly effective. First, local anesthesia is administered, and a rubber dental dam is placed to keep the area clean and dry. For molars and premolars, an opening is made through the crown of the tooth; for front teeth, the opening is made from behind. We use specialized instruments to remove the infected pulp and carefully clean the inner chamber. An antimicrobial solution is applied to eliminate remaining bacteria. The space is filled with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha and sealed with dental cement. If additional support is needed, a rod may be placed inside the canal. Finally, a custom-made crown is placed to protect the tooth.
Once a tooth has undergone root canal therapy, it becomes more brittle due to the removal of its nerve and blood supply. A crown provides essential protection by covering and sealing the treated tooth, preventing fractures or reinfection. Dr. Bostani takes an impression of your teeth, and a dental lab creates a custom crown that blends seamlessly with your smile. Once your crown is ready, it will be securely placed to complete your restoration.
With good oral hygiene and regular dental checkups, a repaired tooth should last as long as your natural teeth—often a lifetime. The crown plays a major role in maintaining the integrity of the tooth over time. We provide personalized aftercare guidance to help you protect your restored tooth and keep your smile healthy.
